Veteran publicist Lydia Kanuga, previously of the Chamber Group, Def Jam and Columbia Records, has launched her own firm, When There Are Nine — the name inspired by the late Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s response to the question of when there will be enough women on the U.S. Supreme Court.
\n\nKanuga began her career at Columbia Records as an intern in the A&R department, then moved into publicity at the label. There she worked with Brandi Carlile and television series like “Victorious” and “iCarly.” She moved over to the independent firms the Musebox, Effective Immediately and Big Machine, working extensively in fashion before shifting back into music at Def Jam, where her roster included Teyana Taylor and best new artist Grammy winner Alessia Cara. She moved over to 12Tone with former Def Jam CEO Steve Bartels and remained there until the company was acquired by Warner Music in 2021, working with Dolly Parton, Anderson .Paak, 88 rising and others. Her multi-year stint as a VP at Chamber followed, where she worked with Toni Braxton, Erykah Badu, and Usher, including for his performance at the Super Bowl Halftime Show in 2024.
