An ICE officer shot a man during a “targeted enforcement operation” Thursday afternoon in New York, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security said.
\n\nThe shooting happened around 4 p.m. along Marble Hill Avenue as officers were seeking a “criminal illegal alien from the Dominican Republic” who had a prior conviction for grand larceny, DHS said in a statement Thursday evening.
\n\n“During the incident, an ICE officer discharged his weapon and the criminal illegal alien was injured,” the department said, without naming the victim.
\n\nThe man was identified as Oscar Belgal, 28, according to four law enforcement sources and past court records.
\n\nOne senior law enforcement official told NBC News the person was apparently in a vehicle when at least one officer opened fire.
\n\nTwo sources say Belgal attempted to “ram his vehicle” into ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations officers who fired.
\n\nICE officers rendered aid to the victim, who is alive and in a hospital, DHS said.
\n\nNew York Mayor Zohran Mamdani said that early reports indicate officers surrounded the man and a 5-year-old child in his car in the Marble Hill neighborhood and that the child was physically unharmed.
