\n\nEight U.S. Navy members aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group have attempted suicide since the beginning of its deployment, according to acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao.
\n\nIn a letter obtained by NBC News, Cao addressed questions on the conditions onboard the USS Lincoln, which had a record-breaking deployment of over nine months in the Middle East, sent by Democratic Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand of New York.
\n\nThe strike group, which is made up of about 7,500 service members, includes "the crew, and Sailors from the carrier air wing, strike group and destroyer squadron staff, escorting destroyers, and all embarked aviation squadrons," Cao wrote.
\n\nCao asserted that the medical personnel onboard were able "to take care of all medical, surgical, and mental health needs for the crew throughout the entirety of the deployment up until this point." Cao also noted that due to the length of the deployment, food options were reduced "for a short time."
