The first hurricane of the Atlantic season is forecast to hit the U.S. Gulf Coast as soon as tomorrow.
\n\nSome Floridians spent part of today filling sandbags to protect their homes against the rain and flooding expected from Hurricane Isaias.
\n\n“I’m trying to make sure that the flooding from my neighbor’s house doesn’t go into mine,” Nathalie Williams told NBC News at a site in Pensacola where she and others shoveled the sand into bags and put them in their vehicles.
\n\nWilliams said she knows from experience where the water pools after flooding.
\n\n“I was here for Sally, and I know what happened then,” she said, referring to the 2020 hurricane that made landfall in Gulf Shores, Alabama, and flooded that state and parts of Florida.
\n\n“So I just want to be prepared now, and I just want to make sure to do everything I can ahead of time,” she said.
\n\nEscambia County, Florida, Sheriff Chip Simmons urged people to prepare and warned that help might not be available when needed at the height of the storm.
