President Donald Trump has characterized concerns about potentially dire consequences of unrestrained AI development as a “hoax.”
\n\nChris Lehane, the head of global affairs at OpenAI, said that OpenAI supports part of the FRONTIER Act, a bipartisan House bill that would create oversight for frontier artificial intelligence, according to a company spokesperson.
\n\nThe spokesperson confirmed that Lehane said that the company supports part of the bill that would establish a system for independent verification organizations to oversee AI practices and risks.
\n\nPolitico reported earlier today that OpenAI supported part of the FRONTIER Act.
\n\nLast week, Lehane wrote that the company wants "to work with Congress on mandatory, capability-based national AI safety regulation."
\n\n"A serious public framework should reduce, not increase, the concentration of power," he wrote. "Today, frontier laboratories largely set their own rules for managing frontier risks. Democratically accountable standards, independent verification, and meaningful transparency would replace that fragmented system of private governance."
