\n\nThis is the first anniversary of the Oct. 7 attacks that there are no Israeli hostages — living or dead — still inside Gaza.

\n\nThe last living hostages were returned to Israel on Oct. 13 last year, and the body of the final captive, 24-year-old police officer Ran Gvili, was recovered in January this year, bringing a formal end to Israel’s 843-day hostage crisis. As a result, this is also the first anniversary where the country is not plastered in hostage posters.
\n\nThe posters seemed to cover nearly every free inch of wall or lamppost across Israel in the weeks after the 2023 Hamas assault, and they stayed up for years afterward. The images formed a grim honor guard in the main hallway at Ben Gurion Airport, and were the last thing a foreign visitor would see before boarding a flight home.
