Emily St. John Mandel On Writing About The End of the World and What Comes Next

It's about trying to be a decent person

and it's about who you're going to be

\n\n

And I don't mean to imply that the collapse of a country

\n\n

but what I do mean to imply is that it feels like it.

\n\n

And I do see this as a hopeful book.

\n\n

and trying to be a new person, you know,

\n\n

in a rapidly changing and difficult landscape.

\n\n

There's a lot of darkness in the book,

\n\n

and I think reading it and coming into it in the year 2031,

\n\n

which is not that far off the year 2026 where we are now,

\n\n

in the United States, feels very resonant.

\n\n

It feels very timely in troubling ways.

\n\n

I'm curious when you think about the book

\n\n

and you think about what's actually happening

\n\n

And in what ways are those two places different?

\n\n

The difference is that in the country that we live in,

\n\n

You know, in the United States that opens this story,

\n\n

that country ran out of time, that country fractured.

\n\n

I wish that it felt more fictional.

\n\n

You know, I started writing this book in the spring of 2022.

\n\n
