Christa Pike, the woman who survived an execution attempt in Tennessee earlier this week, is on a ventilator as she receives care in the hospital, her lawyers said in a new statement Friday.
\n\n“Christa remains critically ill and is receiving medical care for the devastating effects of Wednesday night’s events,” the lawyers’ statement said. “She is critically ill, unconscious, intubated and receiving breathing assistance through a ventilator.”
\n\nThe statement said she is being treated for “the serious effects of the pentobarbital administered during the execution attempt, including significant injuries to both arms.”
\n\nAt one point, Pike said it felt like her arm was exploding, and she could be heard whimpering, her lawyers said.
\n\nThe state of Tennessee attempted to put Pike to death Wednesday night by lethal injection for a murder she committed when she was 18.
\n\nShe is now 50 and has been on death row for decades.
\n\nPike would have been the first woman executed in the state in 200 years, but she survived two lethal doses of the drug during the failed procedure.
