Americans have $30 trillion saved for retirement. Private equity wants a cut

President Donald Trump says retirement savers should have access to private equity and hedge funds. How one investment lost 92% of its value.

Most of the roughly $30 trillion Americans hold in 401(k)s and IRAs is in mutual funds. Proposed regulations would let regular investors put money in private equity funds previously available only to accredited investors with sufficient assets.

President Donald Trump says Americans hoping to “secure a dignified, comfortable retirement” should be allowed to invest in hedge funds, private equity and crypto through their 401(k)s and IRAs.
