In the early 2000s, baseball used QuesTec technology to judge an umpire’s strike zone. Players and umpires bashed it, but QuesTec set the stage for today’s Automated Ball-Strike (ABS) Challenge System.
In late May 2003, Arizona Diamondbacks ace Curt Schilling was pitching a so-so game against the San Diego Padres when weeks of pent-up frustration came pouring out. That day, Schilling gave up nine hits, walked two batters and allowed three runs in an eventual loss to the Padres, a team that would go on to finish with the third-worst record in baseball.
